Last week, the state of New York passed one of the most controversial bills in America – allowing abortion up until the point of birth. What followed was a scene of rejoicing Democrats, standing ovations, applause, and shockingly positive press at first. But this scene of Democratic victory was quickly met with disgusted Americans calling this evil move by the New York delegation everything from “infanticide” to a “celebration of death.”
Are Democrats really becoming the party of death? Lethal injections have long been debated for criminals on death row – which, happen to be illegal in New York. Yet – delegations of law makers are rejoicing to administer those same lethal injections to babies. It’s sickening to watch a group of Americans fight so hard for the right to kill a baby in a state where the death penalty is deemed morally wrong and therefore, completely illegal.
It doesn’t stop with New York – this week, the state of Virginia introduced a similar bill. Theirs would also allow for abortion up through the moment before birth, but it lifts regulations requiring multiple doctors to be involved in the decision to kill a fully formed, infant ready for birth. The bill was proposed by Virginia Delegate Kathy Tran, who went on record claiming her bill wouldeven protect a woman who asked for an abortion after already starting labor.
Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam was in hot water during his media tour set to throw his support behind Tran’s bill. On a morning radio show– the Governor advocated for killing a baby after birth in the case that the baby survived a “pre-delivery” abortion attempt.
As Americans, we need to looks as this issue not as “pro-life” or “pro-choice” — this is about the intentional killing of another human being, known as legalizing homicide. Vice President Mike Pence discussed late term abortion in an Op Ed to the National Review:
“Not too long ago, the Democratic party’s stated position was that abortion should be “safe, legal, and rare.” It was this widespread rejection of late-term abortion that led alarge bipartisan majority in Congress to pass the partial-birth-abortion ban in 2003. But now look at how far the Democratic party has fallen,” he went on to explain, “Only a handful of countries, including China and North Korea, allow late-term abortions. Until we heard those cheers coming from Albany and the defense of the indefensible over the airwaves in Virginia, we thought states were moving beyond such barbaric practices.”
Americans United for Values cherishes life at every stage, but this recent move by multiple states in our Nation to kill our most vulnerable citizens in the moments directly before or after birth is especially upsetting. The Democratic Party has gone too far this time. This is America – where everyone should have the opportunity of life and a fair shot to thrive.
Our hope is that other state delegations have closely watched the disturbing legislation coming out of New York and Virginia and are prepared to fight against this evil in their home states. We also hope Americans across the country see exactly what the Democratic Party is capable of. This dangerous move to make killing infants permissible will not be tolerated in the United States of America.
