Child wearing mask; CDC children

The CDC is maintaining that children should continue to follow restrictive COVID guidelines, even as school staff members become vaccinated.

In their new COVID guidelines, the CDC said that children as young as two should still be required to wear masks at schools and day-care centers, even after teachers and staff have been vaccinated.

Other guidelines like social distancing will apparently still apply to children into the “foreseeable future.”

“Everyone 2 years and older should wear a mask covering their mouth and nose when around people who do not live in their household, except when eating or sleeping,” the CDC stated.

Reason’s Robby Soave also reported: “The CDC’s guidance says that while jungle gyms, swingsets, and tricycles ‘are important for healthy child development,’ they nevertheless ‘pose a risk for spreading COVID-19.’ Health officials recommend getting rid of play spaces that allow kids to interact closely, and also separating the kids into smaller groups—with fences if necessary.”

Most Americans agree that the pandemic is not over yet and we need to do what we can to stop it. However, leaders are continuing to apply harsh rules to children that effectively mar their childhood and restrict their freedom.

We should continue to protect the most vulnerable from the coronavirus, but children should be allowed to be children without the overreach of an ineffective public agency like the CDC.
