A 16-year-old high school student was threatened to be kicked out of zoom class because a Trump campaign flag that was hanging in his bedroom was in the background of the call.
The teacher threatened the student to be kicked out of her class at a public high school that is currently conducting virtual learning. The teacher demanded that the student take the flag down or move his camera in order to remain in class. Colusa High School has not commented on the situation at this time, but there is no direct rule against political attire in the dress code.
The student’s mother, Tiffany, claimed that the flag has been in her son’s room since the beginning of the new school year. It has not been an issue in any other classes and it was not addressed before this incident. It appears that the teacher was targeting the student for his personal beliefs without any backing from official rules.
The teacher has apologized to the family for the incident, but the school and the district have not given any guidance to the family for future classes. The dress code mentions a ban against “vulgar, obscene or profane” messages which “degrade any race or other group of individuals.” The Trump flag seemingly falls within the allowed attire.
Tiffany stated that she blames the school and not the teacher for the incident. She understands the mistake of the teacher, but does not understand how the school has not addressed this situation.
